Customer commission

I’m delighted to have finished this recent commission of Molly, a gorgeous Gordon Setter. She was quite a challenging subject, being essentially all black with very few points of reference and little in the way of detail to include, however, I hope I have captured her essential dogness! Unusually for me, I left this one sitting in the studio for many months before I came back to finish her off. I normally don’t feel quite the same way about a painting once I’ve left it for the session, which is why I try to paint all my paintings in one “hit”…..probably this is a habit I should try to break out of.

Anyway, as I say, I wasn’t quite happy with Molly - there was something about her nose that didn’t quite work and I felt that she needed some subtle colour touches to her muzzle, but I didn’t have the courage to dive in an fix those problems. The motivation came from a chat with Molly’s owner, who had been shown the draft work by a friend who had seen it on Instagram. She seemed to like what I had done so far, so I took the plunge and made the changes that I thought were required. This particular painting is on canvas board, 8×8” and mounted in a box frame. I think it works ok this way.

I hope I’ve done Molly justice. She’s a beautiful girl.
